44.8 mile paved trail that runs from its start in Purcellville through Leesburg, Reston, Vienna, and Falls Church and ends in Shirlington. It is the primary route used by most cyclists in Northern Virginia for riding long distances because it connects many jurisdictions.
The full name of the W&OD Trail is the Washington & Old Dominion Trail.
Trail History[]
The W&OD Trail was originally opened in 1974 in Falls Church as a rail-to-trail after the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad closed. After many trail segments were added, the trail reached Purcellville in 1988, and the final portion of the trail, the Carlin Springs Rd underpass in Arlington, opened in 2002.
