Designated area at an intersection between the stop line and crosswalk where cyclists can queue in front of traffic while the light is red. This allows cyclists to establish their position in the lane and to avoid Right hooks from drivers. The bike box is sometimes painted green and may have a special sensor in the pavement allowing the cyclist to trigger the light.
A bike box can also refer to a storage container used for transporting bicycles.
Reference[]
The box refers to the shape of the rectangular area.
